You must believe

Hello! This week in the Cohort space we continue our project of producing PVG sheet music by beginning the construction of a piano part. To participate, be sure to join as a Gold level member (and I have fixed the link to do so).

Later this week you can also expect to see a minor update to MuseScore - version 4.1.1, which will fix the most serious of the bugs that have been reported with 4.1. I've also updated my course to cover most of the new features, although I still have a couple of lessons left to complete.

In Theory

Last week marked the passing of Tony Bennett, one of the master interpreters of the “great American songbook”. I’m no singer, but he was definitely an influence on me through his phrasing and the musical settings he worked in. And one of the most important to me was his collaboration with pianist Bill Evans during the 1970’s. One song in particular they recorded together made a big impression on me, and that is You Must Believe in Spring, by Michel Legrand, with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. There are so many things I could try to unpack about this, but I’m going to focus on how the song exemplifies Michel Legrand’s genius for developing simple motifs. See the full post here for a link to the song and some of my analysis.

Until next time, keep making music!
Marc Sabatella

Hello! As I mentioned last week, I'm making some changes to how subscriptions work in the Outside Shore Music community. Those of you who have accounts on the site but no active subscriptions should already have received a message from me regarding this. Those of you with active subscriptions are not affected. For those of you who don't have accounts on the site already, I'd still love to have you join us, and I'll send out some more info later. This week in the Musicianship Workshop space,...

Hello! As September gives way to October and the leaves start changing here in the Northern hemisphere (and start appearing in the Southern), there are a few changes here in the world of Outside Shore Music also that I'd like to let you know about. First, as I have indicated recently, I have now enabled a new "gamification" feature for the Outside Shore Music community site. The idea is to incentivize engagement - and yes, I know how buzzwordy that sounds, but it's an accurate description....
