Past, present, and future

Hello! This month marks the five-year anniversary of the MuseScore Café and of the Mastering MuseScore School as well as as the two-year anniversary of the Mastering MuseScore Community. So, we'll be taking a look back - and ahead - in our activities this week.

MuseScore Café - Past, present, and future

This week in the MuseScore Café with Marc Sabatella, we celebrate five years of Mastering MuseScore online, explore the current MuseScore ecosystem, and take a sneak peek at some of what's to come...

The free MuseScore Café is live on Wednesday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

Tip of the Week

A plugin in MuseScore is a small add-on program that extends the capabilities of the program, usually by automating some task that might otherwise take many steps. MuseScore comes with a handful of plugins pre-installed, although you do need to enable them before you can use them. Other plugins can be installed from musescore.org.

The plugin framework has changed relatively little between MuseScore 3 & 4, but the changes do mean most existing plugins need a couple of small changes in order to work. Over the past few months, many of the most commonly-used MuseScore 3 plugins have been updated for MuseScore 4, and a few new ones have been developed as well.

For more information, including a free lesson on how to install plugins and a discussion of some of my own favorite plugins, see the full post here.

Music Master Class

This week in the Music Master Class with Marc Sabatella, we'll be looking at melodies of famous compositions as well as those you create in your projects, discussing their use of intervals and other musical aspects.

The free Music Master Class is live on Thursday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

In Theory

I often make the point that dissonance in music is not a bad thing - most music that we enjoy uses it liberally. Tensions and release is the key to creating interest; music that is all consonance and no dissonance is like a story with no conflict of any kind - while there may be pleasant moments, it will seldom hold our attention for long.

Different styles of music tend to use dissonance differently, however. Some use more on average than others, or may leave more dissonances unresolved, or the dissonance may be more conspicuous, or more extreme in its nature.

But also, dissonance is both subjective and relative, and certain sounds that seem dissonant in one place may actually be heard as consonant in another. For more thoughts on this subject, see the full post here.

Until next time, keep making music!

Marc Sabatella

Hello! This week in the Musicianship Workshop, we start creating compositions based on a model provided by an existing work of our choice. This project will be our focus for the remainder of the month. This ongoing workshop is becoming a pretty exciting thing, and people are learning a lot and enjoying the process. We'd love to have you as a part of it as well! If you'd like to join us, please become a Gold-level member of the Outside Shore Music community, and then head to the workshop to...

Hello! As I mentioned last week, I'm making some changes to how subscriptions work in the Outside Shore Music community. Those of you who have accounts on the site but no active subscriptions should already have received a message from me regarding this. Those of you with active subscriptions are not affected. For those of you who don't have accounts on the site already, I'd still love to have you join us, and I'll send out some more info later. This week in the Musicianship Workshop space,...

Hello! As September gives way to October and the leaves start changing here in the Northern hemisphere (and start appearing in the Southern), there are a few changes here in the world of Outside Shore Music also that I'd like to let you know about. First, as I have indicated recently, I have now enabled a new "gamification" feature for the Outside Shore Music community site. The idea is to incentivize engagement - and yes, I know how buzzwordy that sounds, but it's an accurate description....
