Changes...

Hello - this is a week for change! I've been hinting at this for some time, but over the next few days I will be doing some internal reorganization, and by Friday I plan to relaunch my Mastering MuseScore website with a new (but also not so new) name: Outside Shore Music.

Many of you may not be aware of this, but I started publishing music and educational materials under that banner almost 30 years ago. I chose the name originally to reflect a breadth of musical experience that encompasses but also extends beyond the mainstream. Now more than ever, this branding feels right to me as I continue to expand the focus of our community to embrace the varied interests we collectively share.

I'll have more to say about the changes soon enough, but for now, the important thing to know is that the basic content of the site will remain the same - my weekly live streams and office hours, my flagship Mastering MuseScore resources, my various theory courses and workshop projects, places to share and ask questions, my commitment to accessibility, etc. Also, there will be a new site URL but the old links will still work.

None of this will go live until after my regular weekly events, to avoid risk of disruption. But be forewarned that there may be temporary site outages Friday and/or over the weekend as I put things in place. I'll keep you posted.

By the way, also complicating this is the fact that Google and Yahoo are both enforcing some new rules regarding email starting Thursday, so I will also be taking steps to ensure I am complying.

Looking forward to seeing you on the "outside shore" soon!

MuseScore Café

This week in the MuseScore Café with Marc Sabatella, we look at the different ways of making changes to your score - editing notes and rests, transposition, add/removing/replacing instruments, adjusting formatting, and more. We'll also take a sneak peek at some changes in store for this community!

The free MuseScore Café is live on Wednesday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

Tip of the Week

MuseScore 4 recently added a convenient feature to quickly change one or more dynamic markings, such as from "f" to "ff", in a single click. In this video post, I show you how to select and change dynamics.

In Theory

The Neapolitan sixth chord is a very colorful chromatically altered chord that is normally used sparingly. In this video post, I show what it is, how it works, and demonstrate a striking example at the beginning of the second Kyrie of Bach's B Minor mass.

Until next time, keep making music!
Marc Sabatella

Hello! This week in the Musicianship Workshop, we start creating compositions based on a model provided by an existing work of our choice. This project will be our focus for the remainder of the month. This ongoing workshop is becoming a pretty exciting thing, and people are learning a lot and enjoying the process. We'd love to have you as a part of it as well! If you'd like to join us, please become a Gold-level member of the Outside Shore Music community, and then head to the workshop to...

Hello! As I mentioned last week, I'm making some changes to how subscriptions work in the Outside Shore Music community. Those of you who have accounts on the site but no active subscriptions should already have received a message from me regarding this. Those of you with active subscriptions are not affected. For those of you who don't have accounts on the site already, I'd still love to have you join us, and I'll send out some more info later. This week in the Musicianship Workshop space,...

Hello! As September gives way to October and the leaves start changing here in the Northern hemisphere (and start appearing in the Southern), there are a few changes here in the world of Outside Shore Music also that I'd like to let you know about. First, as I have indicated recently, I have now enabled a new "gamification" feature for the Outside Shore Music community site. The idea is to incentivize engagement - and yes, I know how buzzwordy that sounds, but it's an accurate description....
